It's a rare occasion for us to all pack up, board the dog, stop the mail and go on a real vacation. But we had a niece getting married last Saturday the 18th of July in Hobbs, NM, and we and four of our St. Louis crew met there for a long overdue visit.
Congratulations
Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Norton
On Sunday the three to go crew + one neice Lexi went to Carlsbad Caverns National Park to go exploring. If your travels take you even close to these beautiful and historic caverns, do make an effort to go there. Carlsbad Caverns were formed as a unique result of weather and climatological changes in the Permian ages (00000000) millions ago. Unlike other caves and canverns that are usually form by volcanoes and the power of water cutting them out of the rock, Carlsbad is formed by receding of the ocean and the remaining natural reef formations from the Permian period 250,000,000 years ago.
Carlsbad is located in the Guadalupe Mountains in southeastern New Mexico..
While the photos cannot do the magnitude and beauty justice, below are some of the here's some of the beauty.
These caverns are not for the faint of heart or body. There is a shortcut path, but we started out on the longer trail, and there is no good way to bail out till you get to the end of the trail. It's a steep downhill descent to 720 ft. below the natural entrance, and I can guarantee there are ooohhhhs and ahs at every turn.
The grand finale to the day is when the Mexican free-tailed bats that live and raise their family within the Bat Cave at the caverns, and we're talking thousands of them, predictably at dusk every night, swarm by hundreds at a time out from the hole of the natural entrance and make their entrance into the desert for their nightly feeding - no not on blood, but doing their duty to help control flying pests such as moths, mosquitoes, flies, and other bugs by eating three times their weight every night.
Thanks to Fairfield Inn in Hobbs, NM for making our trip so pleasurable, and to their friendly staff for always being courteous and helpful. Also a great big thanks to Continental Airlines crews for getting us to the church right on schedule, and returning us home safely and on time.
And Four To Go - All Home Safely
